The University of Trier conducted a study on “perceptions of neighbouring towns in a cross-border network of city”, it showed that Luxembourgish residents consider Trier more attractive than Metz or Saarbrücken.

The study, that was conducted under the direction of Peter zur Nieden of geography students from the University of Trier, showed that Luxembourgish residents consider Trier the most attractive city in the Quattropole network that is composed of Metz, Luxembourg, Saarbrucken and Trier. It is they favourite neighbouring city for shopping and strolling but they rarely go over for leisure activities or private visits.

Cross-border professional relationships are also rare since only one in ten Luxembourg resident has a close relationship with a work colleague living in Trier. It is still higher than for the other 2 towns, only 6% of the Luxembourg residents have professional contacts in Metz only 4% in Saarbrücken.

For private contacts, however, the figures are higher, 25%  of the Grand-Duchy residents have friends in Trier compared to 16% for Metz and 4% for Saarbrücken.

To achieve the study, a total of four major surveys were conducted over a period of four years in the four cities of the Quattropole.
