Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox chews on bubblegum during batting practice at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx borough of New York City. Pedroia has had season-ending surgery to repair a broken bone in his left foot.
Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia had season-ending surgery Friday to repair a broken bone in his left foot.
A screw was inserted into Petroia's foot in the operation, after the bone had failed to heal satisfactorily.
The 2008 American League Most Valuable Player finished the season with 12 homers, 41 RBIs and a .288 batting average.
Pedroia fouled a ball off his foot on June 25. He was sidelined until August 17.
When he returned he played in only two games before pain in his foot landed him back on the disabled list.
Pedroia said prior to Thursday's game in Baltimore, where the Red Sox concluded a three-game series, that the operation would help the foot heal.
