Twenty years after creation of the current electoral system in Luxembourg, questions are being raised by the smaller parties.

One country, four voting regions, sixty members of parliament. This concept has been part of the Grand-Duchy's constitution since the end of the 80's, but is it set in stone? No, according to the parties the least represented in parliament.

In August, as reported on News352, the ADR party criticised an imbalance between the centre and east of the country. The Green party favour one single constituency. "The current system favours the big parties," said MP Camille Gira.

"It takes 10-12% to be elected from the east or north, ...it is complicated for small parties," said David Wagner, from Dei Lenk (left). "A debate on the subject would be interesting, but we really want a system that represents the entire resident population”.

The current system, however has managed to stabilise the number of MP's at sixty rather than the fluctuating system of the past. "If we had not changed, we would be more than seventy members today," explained Alex Bodry a socialist who took part in the discussions in the 80s.
