A minister has raised concerns for resident after the number of flights passing through Luxembourg doubled.

According to health minister Mars di Bartolomeo, there have been 803 night flights so far in 2010.

This figure, taking into account other flights for the remaining four months of the year, is considerably higher than the number recorded in 2008 (1310) and 2009 (915).

Delays caused by a particularly harsh winter and the Icelandic ash cloud are thought to be the cause of this year’s increase.

But DP minister Xavier Bettel is concerned that not enough is being done to limit night flights and their negative effects on those living on a flight path.

He noted that although the European Directive calls for a cap on flights between 10pm and 6am or 11pm and 7am, he had observed flights through Luxembourg between midnight and 6am.
