Krystle Warren’s concert on Friday evening was held in the Purple Lounge, Casino 2000 Mondorf les Bains.
For those of you who don’t know Krystle Warren, how could I describe her music to you? Soul? Soothing? Emotional? Quiet? Loud? Uplifting? Sad? Country? Gospel? Contempory ? Modern? ...... Well how about all of the above!
Krystle, accompanied just by her guitar managed to fill the Purple Lounge not just with her mesmerising expression-filled voice, but also whisked us away on an emotional journey with every song. She seemed to have the ability to almost change the direction of her songs with each note. One moment loud, the next so soft you could barely hear the bar staff creeping around. She captivated a very appreciative audience with her silky tones and facial expressions that fitted her music so well.
Krystle has been described in previous reviews I’ve read as having a style similar to Macy Gray or Tracy Chapman. I suppose that reviews have to do that to give us an idea of a “starting point” of what to expect. At the same time as sort of agreeing with these reviews, I also think Krystle’s style is quite unique. She moves around from musical style to style, emotion to emotion so effortlessly you cannot possibly pigeon-hole her into just the same styles as Macy or Tracy.
As the concert went on, you forgot that it was just Krystle and her guitar on the stage. She enchanted an audience not just with her singing, but also used her guitar in such a way that it mimicked the emotions of her voice as well as being very rhythmic.
As the concert drew to a close, Krystle announced her last song would be the Beatles song Eleanor Rigby, and she made this song all hers in her soul-like, smooth style. Once the song came to an end, the audience was not ready to let her leave. “How do you follow a song like that?” she said “It’s kind of a show killer song”. But Krystle, after thinking for a while, came back with an amusing but still impressive, rendition of “Something Stupid”.
It was a great night and quite courageous of Krystle Warren to face a crowd that may have never experienced her music, especially without the support of a band and just herself and a guitar, but that audience left wiser and I’m sure she attracted many new fans.
Here's a bit of background into Krystle's career to date; She discovered her musical calling at 13 when she saw the Beatles on television. At the age of 20 she made her debut in small clubs in her hometown in Kansas USA and as she began in the music scene, was encouraged by other singers, artists and poets.
Later on, driven by her thirst for new influences, Krystle moved to New York and formed the band "The Faculty." She did not have long to wait for success. One year later, Krystle Warren and the Faculty "with musicians such as Zap Mama, went on tour across the United States. It was at this point that Krystle Warren met blues man, Keziah Jones. He instantly fell under the spell of this “pearl of soul”, and they began a wonderful adventure together.
Krystle Warren together with her band, The Faculty, released their debut album in March this year entitled “Circles”. You can also check out Krystle on her website:
