The leaders of the Syndicate for Education and Science are demanding a rethink of the recruitment policy of the Ministry of Education. "There is a marked shortage of trained secondary school teachers", criticized Vice President Guy Foetz. Approximately 22 percent of lessons were given by instructors who had no pedagogical training in the subject, a study has uncovered. Guy Foetz advocates, in this context, that fewer tests be required in the recruitment exam for high school teachers.

Invest more in education

"Only four percent of GDP invested in education," stressed Guy Foetz. In other countries such as Sweden and Finland these amounts were up as much as nine percent. The teachers' union accuses the Ministry of Education of counseling resistance. "It is as if you speak against the wind," said Guy Foetz. "The children are under constant observation" Regarding the situation in primary schools, the ministry is also not spared criticism. "Significantly, many lessons are being dropped when a teacher is ill and there is no substitute available," said SEW-President Monique Adam.

The assessment of student skills is also reported to have a negative aspect on educational progress: "The children are under constant scrutiny," said Adam, the teachers spend a lot of energy in order to evaluate the children in writing and this takes away from the learning experience. A positive aspect of the school reform, highlights, however, that there now is a plan for a better exchange between the teachers.
