The stadium project in Livange that is not only a plan for a football field but also a shopping mall with an area of 75,000 m2 has provoked anger from Luxembourg City. In times of crisis the City is unable to understand how the government could “squander” so much money for such a project.
The actual construction of a new national football stadium that the Luxembourg City vitally needs is not criticised , but the construction of a parallel gigantesque mall of 75,000 m2, is the target of the attacks.
"Such a project could provoke a huge imbalance and will have dramatic consequences on businesses in the City," stated the Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, Paul Helminger citing the construction of a national stadium between Livange and Bettembourg which with plans to add a huge shopping mall of 75,000 m2.
For the mayor, Luxembourg City, is very close to having has enough shopping centers (Kirchberg, and soon Ban de Gasperich) not to mention those already existing across the entire country.
Besides the high concentration of shopping centers that might weaken the existing shops, the City also questioned how the state will finance a project of such magnitude. "The state said that Livange will not cost them anything. But in fact the whole transport network will have to be review " said somewhat irritated Green MP and deputy mayor of the capital, François Bausch.
According to the reasoning of the deputy, 75,000 m2 of shops will attract a huge influx of cars that would require the state to expand motorways to three lanes and Luxembourg City will also have to invest to serve Livange. "Is this really a priority in times of crisis? Developing the land of a private developer rather than developing public transport in the City? "Asks Francois Bausch.
