The EU Commission has been in discussions concerning possible deals for relocation of the Diekirch beer to Belgium.
The results are that clear rules should be followed: On the Diekirch bottle label it should only show where the beer is brewed.
The Commission warns against misleading the consumers and has added this condition to the the proposed relocation plans.
"The Luxembourg government should insist on strict compliance with the labeling directive", stated the Green MEP Claude Turmes.
As for consumers, given the product name may give the impression that the beer was brewed by the production site in Diekirch if left as it currently is , it is important that the label is changed to show the actual brewing site so as not to mislead the consumer.
This situation proves that the change of the production site is not that simple, as the parent company ABInbev is well aware, resulting in a press release by Claude Turmes to explain the situation.
The Luxembourg government should insist upon strict compliance with the labeling directive, the EU parliament advised, and the Luxembourg brewers make sure their names are in accordance with EU law.
Therefore if Diekirch beer relocates to Belgium, it must change it's label.
