Two trains collided head-on Monday morning near Hal in Belgium. Recent reports state that there are likely to be at least 20 dead. Luxembourg Air Rescue are also at the scene.
It is unsure at this stage what caused the accident which could be down to bad weather. The crash occurred on the line between Brussels and Hal.
According to Infrabel, the accident occurred between two passenger train shortly before 8:30 at Huizingen-Hal." One of the trains involved was a train from Mons-Liège
The other was the liaison Leuven-Braine-le-Comte. Emergency services are on site. Local police confirmed that there were several serious injuries. And reports filtering through are stating that there are 20 possible deaths. The cause of the accident is not known.
Traffic halted
A passenger, who was on the train Mons-Liège, said: "There was a collision, it was brutal. A moment later, everyone was turned upside down. The two carriages at the front were thrown and turned upside down. It was brutal. People were very shocked. There are no words to describe it. The train didn't brake at all. Moments later, everyone was ... You could not predict The train did not slow down. We waited as the doors were blocked. We had to wait more or less a quarter of an hour. We had to get off the train. And everyone was escorted to a tavern Hiuzingen . I saw the wounded. But the two carriages infront of us ... "
Following this accident, the rail traffic was interrupted between Hal and Brussels Midi. Rail traffic on the lines 96 (Brussels-Midi - Quévy), 26 (Hal - Mechelen) and 94 (Brussels-Midi - Tournai / French border) is interrupted. A bus service was set up between Brussels-Midi and between Hal and Hal Etterbeek (both ways).
