In the Chambre des Deputes on Wednesday issues regarding media education for young people was hotly debated by MPs.

The focus was especially on newer medias such as internet. CEPS-INSTEAD, a centre for survey reports, released a new report stating that 30% of young people aged between 12 and 16 spend more than three hours per day watching television. Not to mention the high percentage of teenagers who are addicted  to video games or social networking websites.

These findings leave Green’s MP Claude Adam indifferent. For him, it is more important to protect youths from abuse and threats of new technologies, such as cyberbulling.  He also believes that teacher education on the use of newer medias is needed. "It is technical skills that are required. We need to encourage teacher training, provide teaching materials and assess skills related to media. Too often it is the education on how to use the media that is lacking” he stated.

Mil Majerus of the CSV party, believes that complete global education is needed of new medias especially the use of the internet.   He stated that there are certainly advantages in terms of using information and communication but also disadvantages such as pornography, bullying, addiction to name but a few. Majerus went on to say that television should be banished from the bedroom. "The media is the wrong babysitter ".  He said.   However a law cannot be made against bedroom TV..
