Italian resigns amid row over stripping John Terry of England captaincy

The England football team have suffered another self-inflicted setback in their preparation for next summer's European Championships. On Wednesday evening Fabio Capello resigned as head coach after a meeting in the afternoon with FA officials. The meeting was organised after Capello had openly criticised the FA's recent decision to relieve John Terry of the England captaincy, amid allegations the Chelsea player racially abused an opponent. Capello said in an interview with Italian channel RAI, that it was wrong to punish someone before a court had reached a verdict.

The shock resignation means England will probably be led by U-21 coach Stuart Pearce for their friendly match against Holland on 29 February.
