Motoring association ACL confronted with numerous cases of diesel freezing in vehicles

The sub-zero temperatures currently gripping large parts of Europe, including Luxembourg, have now started to affect cars as well. Luxembourg's motoring association ACL issued a warning on Friday about diesel freezing in vehicles. Since Thursday, the road assistance services of ACL have had to intervene on numerous occasions because of diesel freezing in vehicles' engines. As the weather will stay bitterly cold over the weekend, this situation is not expected to improve.

Motorists are being advised to park their vehicles indoors, in case this possibility exists. Under no circumstances should one add petrol to diesel, especially if it's a new engine. Even if there is no sure way of preventing diesel from freezing, people are being advised to change the fuel filter in their vehicle.

Because of the high number of distress calls currently coming in, ACL is asking their members to be patient. Assistance will be sent as quickly as possible.

In the mean time, the current cold weather, made worse by Siberian winds, is expected to last a few more days. On Friday, temperatures were between -6 and -8 degrees, because of the winds, it felt more like -12 and -15 degrees. In some places in the north of the country, there could even be some light snowfall.

The good news though, is that there will be beautiful sunshine the whole coming weekend, ideal for walks through a winter landscape.
The latest bulletin from the weather station at Findel airport says that the situation might improve as of Tuesday afternoon. A north-east wind will then bring slightly warmer temperatures.
